Review of the Muffins at Berkelouw Books
/The first time I came to this bookstore I had the most extraordinary muffin. I feel like I've been suckered by every subsequent muffin. Berkelouw Books is a beautiful three-story bookstore in Paddington, a Sydney neighborhood full of boutiques. The second floor is a cafe with floor to ceiling windows that are open to the street, so it is flooded with light and fresh air. I spend every walk to Berkelouw thinking about how I won't have a muffin.
It was the crisp, sugary crust of the first muffin that made it so special. And also the berries, perfectly tart and juicy. To be fair I was skeptical of the next two muffins going into those deals. The second was a blackberry, apple, cinnamon muffin. Bravo to the first ingredient (see above, berries) but no thanks to combo of the second two. I bought that muffin hoping the apple and cinnamon would disappear on my way back to the table.
The third muffin was vegan raspberry, yay raspberry, boo vegan. Then again I purchased the muffin precisely because it was vegan, which cancels out its being a muffin, which allowed me to both eat a muffin and uphold my daily resolution not to eat a muffin.
In summary: great bookstore, good muffins, poor judgement.
